ARTISANAL HAMMOCKS COMBINE A CENTURIES-OLD TRADITION WITH MODERN DESIGN
A few years ago, her love for items lovingly made in Mexico by artisan, indigenous hands, led Yucatecan artist Adriana Romero to create and promote beautiful, distinctive textiles, especially those from the states of Oaxaca and Yucatan.
Adriana invited artisans to join her in the production of rugs, tapestries, and bedding items incorporating millenary techniques and materials, with a bold, contemporary feel. It was only a matter of time for her to set her eyes on the hammocks of her native Yucatan.
Together with the artisans of Amattina, Adriana designed patterns that appeal to modern sensibilities, restating Mexico's traditional, vibrant colors into a more neutral palette. Her goal would be to “showcase the versatility of the textiles, and to have them match different interior design styles,” while maintaining the quality, durability, softness and flexibility that are a feature of the hammocks traditionally made in Yucatan. “All hammocks are handmade, with careful attention to detail; this results in unique, top-quality pieces with personalities of their own.”
Adriana's concept with Amanttina seeks to create art-objects that can create bold, cozy atmospheres that foster relaxation in any space, in any season.
Her concern for artisans to be fairly compensated for their talent and work was shared by Amanttina. Together, they came up with a model that aims to break the poverty cycle that many times keeps artisans and their families from opportunities to grow and develop.
"Initiatives like Amanttina's, which cuts out middlemen, allows artisans to thrive while doing what they love," Adriana pointed out.
